Fall 2020

From object to letter

The From Object to Letter workshop asked participants to find objects whose function was not to draw, write or paint. Eg. an apple, a cigarette, a shoe. Participants explored practical methods of getting their objects to “set tracks” - e.g. cut, stamp, burn, emboss, sprinkle, roll, drill, etc. They were then to draw a font based on these formal studies. The workshop thus took the participants through a design process that included conceptualization, sketching and final execution, while the participants developed an understanding of the relationship between digital fonts and the analog writing tools they are often based on.
