The Arabic saying LW TITLA3 B RASEK NAKHLA is the title of ihsan saad ihsan tahir‘s largest solo exhibition to date. In dialogue with Four Boxes’ iconic architecture, the artist has created a site-specific total installation that brings viewers closer to the work of the hand and the artist’s personal life.
In 1995, the Tahir family arrived in the Danish provincial town of Skive after a long journey from Iraq. Their arrival defined the national framework that shaped tahir’s upbringing and later the environment in which he was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
As a newly graduated visual artist, tahir returns to Skive with archival materials and sketches from the family’s early years in the market town.
The title LW TITLA3 B RASEK NAKHLA is written in Arabizi—an informal writing system that emerged because early mobile phones did not support Arabic characters. In Danish, the poetic Arabic proverb can be translated as: “even if a palm tree were to grow out of your head.” The expression is often used by parents as a dismissal, similar to “impossible” or “only in your imagination.” It is a saying that tahir—like many other children of Arab parents—heard repeatedly throughout his upbringing.
The exhibition presents both new and existing works in granite, charcoal, and oil. LW TITLA3 B RASEK NAKHLA is part of the exhibition series unboxing, curated by Rebekka Laugesen and supported by the Ny Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish Arts Foundation.
