Manual tools / Tool manuals

The emergence of the tool has forever changed the Homo Sapiens. Perhaps it is our ability to make and use objects that truly makes us human. Our evolution have been intertwined with the development of our tools. The first simple stone tools allowed us to cut, hit and chop in a way that our weak hands and teeth were incapable of. The first needle made from bone allowed us to make clothes and adapt to environments otherwise too cold for us. Our tools allow our clumsy hands to work with precision, they allow us to travel more efficiently than by way of human locomotion and they allow us to store memory and knowledge outside of our brains.
Through history the tools we surround ourselves with have become increasingly specialized. Each trade developing its own set of tools to perform their tasks with the best possible precision and quality.

Each one of you has been given a manual tool used by the modern day graphic designer. This tool has evolved with the demands of the profession; it has taken on different shapes throughout history. Many designers have taken it upon them to improve this tool, to develop its production technique and its performance to finally bring it to its ultimate form in which it arrives on your desk today.

Your assignment this week will be to research your tool and develop a tool manual. Your manual may take the form of a POSTER / BOOK / MANUAL/ DRAWING / VIDEO / PERFORMANCE / GAME / INSTALLATION / OPERA / In the end of the week the manuals will be presented in an exhibition in the Four Boxes Gallery.
